After all, history is one of the most important human sciences, and linked to all other sciences. Thus, man - as a social being - has become indispensable in studying his past in an attempt to anticipate his reality and future. The History Department is one of the important departments in the College of Arts, as it aims to recruit qualified scientific cadres to contribute to correcting historical facts. And introducing civilization
Islam, which led the world in its eras of prosperity, as well as qualifying students academically and scientifically in a manner commensurate with the requirements of the labor market.
The History Department also sought to raise the level of creativity, innovation and scientific thinking through the graduate studies program, which we hope will be introduced in the department soon so that the outcomes of the educational process are commensurate with the ambitions of the college and the university’s senior administration.

Description
The department was opened in 1993 at the Gharyan College of Education (formerly), where an elite group of professors assumed the task of teaching within the department, and the History Department became one of the basic departments in the College of Arts, in which the student, after completing the academic courses, obtains a bachelor’s degree in history, as the first batch graduated in the year 1997 AD, with 40 male and female students, most of whom joined the educational staff, and some of whom obtained master’s and doctoral degrees.
Vision
Consolidating moral and human values in understanding the dimensions of reading and writing national, Arab and international history in its various styles, studying the past for the sake of the present and anticipating the future, preparing a generation capable of combining authenticity and modernity, and meeting the needs of the labor market by creating educational outcomes based on thinking and creativity.
Mission
Prepare a generation specialized in historical knowledge and be able to
Analysis, deduction, self-development, and developing the educational process through developing programs and curricula in line with scientific development.

Preparing researchers and specialists in history (ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary).
Preparing students for educational, leadership, and service positions in education and other fields.
Activating the role of students and researchers in the study of history to contribute to deepening the relationship between history and other sciences.
Introducing students and researchers, especially at the university level, to the history of Libya, the history of the Arab world, and world history.
Pushing students and researchers in the postgraduate stage towards the quality and originality of scientific research by delving into specialized studies and writing scientific research.

The student studies a group of courses over eight semesters, starting from ancient history, through medieval history, to modern and contemporary history, and some courses that are considered college and university requirements.
